Members of the Nigeria Governors’ Forum (NGF) convened for an in-person meeting at the Forum’s Secretariat in Abuja on Wednesday night. The meeting saw the participation of 15 governors, primarily from the All Progressives Congress (APC). Among the attendees were two opposition governors: Alex Otti of Abia State, representing the Labour Party (LP), and Chukwuma Soludo of Anambra State, from the All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA).
Although the agenda of the meeting was not disclosed to journalists, it comes at a time when the governors have been grappling with the controversial tax reform bills presented by President Bola Tinubu to the National Assembly.
The new tax bills, which have stirred intense debate and criticism, have faced significant opposition from various quarters, including the 36 state governors under the aegis of the National Economic Council (NEC). In particular, the 19 northern governors have openly rejected certain provisions of the bills, calling for their immediate withdrawal from the National Assembly.
