Governors Pledge Stronger Cooperation with US on Economic Growth, Governance, and Health

The Nigeria Governors’ Forum (NGF) has called for enhanced collaboration with the United States to drive economic development, improve governance, and advance health initiatives in Nigeria.

In a communique released following their meeting in Abuja, the governors reaffirmed their commitment to working alongside state legislatures to promote governance reforms and ensure efficient policy implementation at the subnational level.

The communique highlighted an engaging session with the U.S. Ambassador to Nigeria, who outlined his vision for a refreshed, mutually beneficial partnership between the two nations. The ambassador emphasized the shift from a traditional donor-recipient relationship to one focused on equal collaboration, with an emphasis on fostering economic opportunities for Nigerians.

“The Ambassador outlined four key priorities that will guide U.S. engagement with Nigeria: Enhancing trade and improving the business environment to attract investments and drive economic growth. Promoting transparency and accountability in governance to strengthen institutions.”

The governors welcomed the renewed approach, acknowledging the pivotal role that states play in driving social and economic development across the country. They expressed enthusiasm for the continued deepening of cooperation with the U.S. on these shared priorities.

In addition to international relations, the NGF also addressed key domestic issues. The Forum urged the Minister of Women Affairs, Imaan Ibrahim, to expand the Nigeria For Women Project (NFWP), a program designed to enhance women’s economic empowerment. Initially implemented in six states, the NFWP Scale-Up aims to expand nationwide, with a goal to lift 100 million Nigerians out of poverty by empowering women through Women Affinity Groups (WAGs), livelihood grants, and capacity-building initiatives.

Furthermore, the Forum engaged with the Conference of Speakers of State Legislatures of Nigeria (COSLON) to strengthen collaboration between state legislatures and the NGF. The discussion also included ensuring that subnational perspectives are effectively represented in the ongoing constitutional review process. COSLON informed the NGF about its partnership with Development Finance Institutions (DFIs) to digitize the State Houses of Assembly, with the goal of enhancing legislative efficiency and transparency.

The NGF reiterated its commitment to working with state legislatures to advance governance reforms and ensure that policies are effectively implemented at the state level.
