Greenland PM denounces U.S ‘foreign interference’ ahead visit

Greenland’s Prime Minister, Mute Egede, has accused the United States of meddling in the territory’s political affairs following the announcement of an American delegation’s visit this week.

The White House revealed on Sunday that Usha Vance, wife of U.S. Vice President JD Vance, would travel to Greenland with her son and a U.S. delegation, which Egede claimed would include National Security Adviser Mike Waltz.

Egede emphasized that the visit should not be seen as just a private trip, stating, “It must be made clear that our integrity and democracy must be respected without foreign interference.” He further stressed that the delegation’s arrival, set for Thursday through Saturday, was of significant concern to Greenland’s sovereignty.

The visit comes after former U.S. President Donald Trump’s repeated assertions that he wanted the U.S. to acquire Greenland, even suggesting the possibility of using force to achieve that goal. Since assuming office again in January, Trump’s stance on Greenland has raised tensions, particularly with Egede’s caretaker government, which assumed office after the March 11 elections.

Jens-Frederik Nielsen, leader of the centre-right Democrats, who is expected to become Greenland’s next prime minister, has previously criticized Trump’s approach as “inappropriate.” Nielsen has emphasized that Greenlanders must have control over their own future and should reject external interference.

Greenland, currently a Danish territory, is rich in untapped mineral and oil resources, though exploration of oil and uranium has been banned. Despite strong support for independence from Denmark, polls indicate that most Greenlanders do not support the idea of being annexed by the U.S.

Earlier this year, in January, Trump’s son, Donald Jr., also visited Greenland for a brief stop.
