Heavy Military Presence in Edo State Ahead of Governorship Election

Edo State is under heightened security as soldiers and around 100 operatives from the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) have been deployed along its borders with Kogi, Delta, Ondo, and Anambra states in anticipation of Saturday’s governorship election. This increased military presence aims to ensure a smooth electoral process and prevent vote-buying.

Seventeen political parties are contesting the election, with prominent candidates including Senator Monday Okpebholo from the All Progressives Congress (APC), Asue Ighodalo from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), and Olumide Akpata from the Labour Party (LP). Security detachments have been strategically positioned in key areas of Benin City, including Akpapava Road, Ring Road, and Sapele Road bypass.

Deputy Inspector-General of Police Frank Mba stated that the deployment of military personnel is essential for maintaining order during the polls. He emphasized the collaborative effort with other security agencies to manage the election’s logistics, especially given the state’s borders with multiple regions.

The EFCC’s Port Harcourt Zonal Director, Adebayo Adeniyi, confirmed the agency’s commitment to monitoring the election, leading a team of 100 operatives tasked with deterring electoral fraud.

In preparation for the election, the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has begun deploying over 5,000 Bimodal Voter Accreditation Systems and other sensitive materials across the state. Distribution was supervised by State Resident Electoral Commissioner Onuoha Anugbum, ensuring transparency and proper oversight throughout the process.

Political party representatives, including former Speaker of the Edo State House, Festus Ebea of the APC, and PDP chairman Tony Aziegbemi, expressed satisfaction with the materials’ distribution and the commitment to a transparent electoral process.

As of Thursday, all campaigning activities must cease, in compliance with the Electoral Act 2022. INEC reiterated the importance of adhering to legal provisions, warning against any campaign-related attire or materials at polling stations on Election Day.

With the election fast approaching, candidates from the PDP, APC, and LP are optimistic about their chances. LP’s Public Relations Officer, Sam Uruopa, highlighted the party’s strong campaign efforts, while a PDP leader endorsed Ighodalo’s experience to lead the state effectively.

The atmosphere is charged as Edo State prepares for a significant electoral event this Saturday.
