In a solemn ceremony held in his hometown of Omueke, Isiokpo, Rivers State, Herbert Wigwe, the late Chief Executive Officer of Access Holdings Plc, alongside his wife, Chizoba, and son, Chizi, were laid to rest in a private interment following a funeral church service.
The burial, which followed a week-long series of funeral rites to honor the life of the esteemed banking guru and his family, commenced with a funeral service that began promptly at 11:00 AM today. Mourners, including friends, associates, and well-wishers from both local and international communities, gathered to pay their final respects.
Dignitaries present at the service included Senate President Godswill Akpabio, Minister of the Federal Capital Territory Rotimi Chibuike Amaechi, Rivers State Governor Nyesom Wike, business magnate Aliko Dangote, HRH Muhammadu Sanusi II, and other notable figures from various sectors.
Also in attendance were Rivers State Governor Sim Fubara, State Commissioner of Police Olatunji Disu, and Governor Douye Diri of Bayelsa State, among others.
The trio of Herbert, Chizoba, and Chizi Wigwe, along with former Group Chairman of Nigerian Exchange Group Plc (NGX Group) Abimbola Ogunbanjo and two pilots, tragically lost their lives in a helicopter crash near Halloran Springs, California, on February 9, 2024. The exact cause of the crash remains unknown, although witnesses reported seeing the chopper engulfed in flames before its descent.
As part of the events leading to Wigwe’s burial, numerous tributes were paid by friends, family members, captains of industry, and associates to honor the legacy of the late banking icon.
