The House of Representatives has strongly refuted claims that lawmakers demanded bribes from vice-chancellors of Federal Universities in exchange for approving their 2025 budget allocations. In a statement issued on Wednesday, House spokesman Akin Rotimi described the media report as “unfortunate” and a deliberate attempt to tarnish the institution’s reputation.
Rotimi emphasized that the 10th House of Representatives remains steadfast in its commitment to transparency, accountability, and the highest ethical standards in its legislative activities. He dismissed the report as baseless and sensational, asserting that it lacked thorough investigative effort and only sought to amplify unfounded claims.
“The 10th House of Representatives is firmly committed to transparency, accountability, and the highest ethical standards in all its legislative activities. These values form the bedrock of our operations,” Rotimi said. “It is, therefore, imperative to address the baseless and sensational allegations, which appear to be part of a deliberate attempt to undermine the integrity of the House and erode public trust.”
The statement also criticized the media outlet for publishing the report without seeking a response from the House spokesman prior to its release, undermining the credibility of the story. The House later received a request for comment only two days after the article had already been published.
Rotimi further encouraged anyone with credible evidence of wrongdoing to present it to the relevant authorities, including the House Committee on Ethics and Privileges, or to anti-corruption bodies such as the Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission (ICPC), for independent investigation.
“We call on all stakeholders, particularly the media, to approach their responsibilities with integrity, professionalism, and a commitment to nation-building,” Rotimi concluded. “Together, we can strengthen our democracy and promote a more accountable and transparent governance system.”
The House reiterated that such allegations would not distract them from their constitutional duty to ensure accountability, good governance, and the welfare of Nigerians.
