IGP deploys DIG Alabi, AIG Igweh, orders movement restrictions during Ondo polls

Inspector-General of Police Kayode Adeolu Egbetokun has announced the deployment of Deputy Inspector-General (DIG) Sylvester Abiodun Alabi as the coordinating officer for the upcoming Ondo Governorship Election.

DIG Alabi will oversee police security strategies aimed at maintaining law and order throughout the electoral period, supported by Assistant Inspector-General (AIG) Bennett Igweh and Commissioner of Police (CP) Tunji Disu, who will serve as AIG and CP Elections, respectively.

According to a statement from the Force Headquarters, these deployments are part of comprehensive security measures to ensure a peaceful, transparent, and credible electoral process during the off-season gubernatorial election scheduled for Saturday, November 16, 2024.

Key security protocols outlined in the statement include:

Restriction of Movement: All vehicular movement on roads, waterways, and other forms of transportation will be restricted from 6 a.m. to 6 p.m. on Election Day, with exceptions for essential services such as ambulances, media personnel, and fire services.

Ban on Security Escorts: Security aides and escorts assigned to VIPs will be prohibited from accompanying them to polling booths and collation centers to prevent disruptions.

Enforcement of Authorized Personnel Only: Unauthorized security personnel, quasi-security agencies, and vehicles with sirens will be barred from operating during the election.

Special Accessibility Provisions: Polling stations will be accessible to individuals with disabilities, pregnant women, nursing mothers, and others facing mobility challenges.

In addition, dedicated helplines for election-related inquiries and incident reporting will be made public ahead of Election Day.

The Nigeria Police Force encourages citizens to report any suspicious activities that could undermine the integrity of the election and reiterates its commitment to fostering a safe and democratic electoral environment.

The Police will collaborate closely with the military and other federal security agencies, emphasizing the importance of stakeholder cooperation for a fair and peaceful election.
