IGP Urges Police to Emulate Edo Election Success Ahead of Ondo Gubernatorial Poll

The Inspector-General of Police (IGP), Kayode Egbetokun, on Tuesday, October 15, urged police officers to replicate the successes achieved during the recent Edo State election as preparations begin for the forthcoming Ondo State off-cycle gubernatorial election.

Speaking at a quarterly conference with strategic police managers at the force headquarters in Abuja, Egbetokun emphasized the need for a robust security framework, encouraging officers to carry out their duties with impartiality and professionalism. “Our mission is to provide a secure environment where voters can freely exercise their democratic rights without fear or intimidation,” he stated.

Egbetokun highlighted the importance of collaboration with other security agencies, the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), and stakeholders to ensure that the Ondo election is conducted fairly and credibly. He commended the officers deployed during the Edo State Governorship election, noting their exemplary conduct contributed to a peaceful electoral process despite initial predictions of high violence.

“Your professionalism and best practices in election security were evident, neutralizing threats and ensuring a peaceful environment,” he remarked, acknowledging the positive feedback received from the public, election observers, and civil society organizations.

He extended special thanks to personnel from other security agencies, including the Department of State Services, the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps, and the Nigerian Immigration Service, for their cooperation during the Edo election.

Egbetokun reaffirmed his confidence in the police’s ability to maintain law and order, stating, “The Nigeria Police Force has grown stronger through our collective dedication, sacrifice, and resilience. Although challenges lie ahead, together we will uphold our core values of integrity, service, and protection.”

He urged officers to maintain discipline as a cornerstone of their leadership and management efforts, reinforcing that their primary mission is to ensure justice, fairness, and human dignity. “Let us approach the future with renewed vigor and resolve, aware that the stability of Nigeria’s security lies in our capable hands,” he added.

In discussing the recent local government elections in Rivers State, Egbetokun defended the police’s actions, stating that their involvement was hampered by conflicting court orders. He explained that while preparations were made for the elections, a Federal High Court initially barred police participation, and subsequent orders led to confusion about their role.

“The police stood by the law,” he stated, clarifying that they had to withdraw based on legal advice amid concerns of potential violence. He concluded by noting that following the elections, the police had to step in to restore order at the request of the President when crisis erupted.
