India’s Modi urges Zelensky to agree for peace talks with Russia

Indian Prime Minister, Narendra Modi, has outlined his country’s “willingness to contribute in all possible ways” to ending the war in Ukraine, after a historic meeting with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky in Kiev.

Modi made this known when he met Zelensky in Kyiv on Friday, August 23 to discuss possibility of talks with Russia.

According to Modi, “the road to resolution can only be found through dialogue and diplomacy.” He said that “both sides should sit together to find a way out of this crisis,” adding India was prepared to help “as a friend” to bring peace.

Although Ukraine is yet to offer a public response to Modi’s comments, but Ukraine’s Western allies hope it signals New Delhi shifting its non-aligned stance over Russia’s invasion.
Modi’s visit is the first by an Indian leader since the two countries established official diplomatic relations in 1992.
India has taken a policy of non-alignment for decades, avoiding taking sides in geopolitical disputes.
