INEC declares petition against Natasha inadequate

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has announced that the petition seeking the recall of Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan, who represents the Kogi Central Senatorial District, does not meet the constitutional requirements.

In a tweet posted on its official ‘X’ handle, INEC stated: “The petition for the recall of the Senator representing the Kogi Central Senatorial District has not met the requirement of Section 69(a) of the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria 1999 (as amended).”

This announcement follows a petition filed by some constituents seeking Akpoti-Uduaghan’s removal from office. The petitioners alleged that the senator had failed in her duties and did not adequately represent the interests of her people. However, INEC’s decision indicates that the petition did not fulfill the necessary legal criteria for the recall process to proceed.

Section 69(a) of the Nigerian Constitution outlines the procedure for the recall of elected officials, requiring a verified petition that reflects the wishes of a significant portion of the constituency. For the recall process to be activated, the petition must meet specific legal thresholds, including the number of registered voters who must sign in support.

The development has sparked mixed reactions in Kogi Central, with some supporters of Senator Akpoti-Uduaghan expressing relief over the commission’s decision, while others continue to call for her recall, alleging poor representation.

In response, Akpoti-Uduaghan has reiterated her commitment to serving the people of Kogi Central, stating that her focus remains on addressing the challenges faced by her constituents and ensuring that their voices are heard in the Senate.

As the situation continues to evolve, INEC’s decision has emphasized the importance of adherence to constitutional processes in the conduct of electoral matters in Nigeria.
