The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has officially recognized Sylvester Ezeokenwa as the authentic national chairman of the All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA), in compliance with a recent Supreme Court judgment.
In a unanimous ruling delivered in November 2024, a five-member panel of the Supreme Court, led by Justice Stephen Adah, affirmed that Ezeokenwa is the rightful leader of the party, dismissing the claims of Edozie Njoku, who had previously been parading himself as the APGA national chairman.
The legal battle between Ezeokenwa and Njoku began in 2023 and resulted in multiple litigations over the control of the party. The court ruling clarified that an earlier judgment, dated October 14, 2021, and subsequently corrected on March 24, 2024, did not grant Njoku any enforceable rights to claim the position of national chairman.
In a statement released on Tuesday, Sam Olumekun, INEC’s national commissioner and chairman of the information and voter education committee, confirmed that the commission had reviewed the Supreme Court judgment. The statement noted that the commission had been formally served with the court’s decision in the case APGA & ANOR vs OYE & ORS (SC/CV/824/2024), which officially recognized Barr. Sylvester Ezeokenwa as the legitimate chairman of the party.
Following the court’s affirmation, INEC has restored Ezeokenwa’s name on its website as the APGA national chairman, ensuring compliance with the ruling of the apex court.
This decision marks the end of the prolonged leadership dispute in the party and solidifies Ezeokenwa’s position as the legal and legitimate leader of the All Progressives Grand Alliance.
