The Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps(NSCDC), Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Command joined the rest of the world in commemorating the International Day of Peace.
The International Day of Peace, also officially known as World Peace Day, is a United Nations-sanctioned holiday observed annually on 21 September.
It is dedicated to world peace, and specifically the absence of war and violence, such as might be occasioned by a temporary ceasefire in a combat zone for humanitarian aid access.
Speaking during a symposium, which is part of the activities to mark the day, with the theme “Cultivating a Culture of Peace” the FCT Commandant Olusola Odumosu PhD said “Peace is not merely the absence of war; it is a way of life. It is a conscious choice to resolve conflict through dialogue, empathy and understanding.”
According to the Spokesperson of the Command, CSC Samuel A Idoko in a Statement, Odumosu further stated that “everyone has a role to play in building this culture that is almost elusive in our society today”.
Dr Odumosu called on all Nigerians and residents of the FCT in particular to break the cycles of violence, heal wounds and build bridges because peace is a very important element for economic growth and development in every society.
Speaking on the topic, “the role of security agencies in promoting peace and unity in Nigeria” the guest lecturers at the symposium Gabriel Almond Kubua a PhD student of Peace and Conflict Studies and Rakiya Lisk Carew from National Orientation Agency (NOA) said security agencies play very important role in ensuring a peaceful society.
They commended the nation’s security agencies for all their effort to ensure we have a violence free society.
