Senator Babangida Hussaini, who represents the Jigawa Northwest Senatorial District, has raised concerns over the rising cost of food items, particularly as the harvest season begins. The senator, who also chairs the Senate Committee on the Federal Road Maintenance Agency (FERMA), called on the federal government and relevant authorities to take urgent action to address the issue.
In a statement, Senator Hussaini, also known as the Walin Kazaure, identified insecurity in food-producing regions as a key factor driving up food prices.
He emphasized that the persistent violence, banditry, and other criminal activities in these areas have severely disrupted food production and contributed to rising costs. “It is most unfortunate that insecurity, banditry, and other criminal activities in food-producing regions have significantly contributed to rising food prices and overall food insecurity in the nation,” Hussaini said. “This trend poses a serious threat to our national food security and stability.”
The senator expressed particular concern about the economic impact on rural communities, especially in northern Nigeria, where many rely on agriculture for their livelihoods. “The rising cost of basic food items is alarming, especially as we enter the harvest season when food crops should typically be more affordable,” he noted.
Hussaini called on all levels of government—federal, state, and local—along with other key stakeholders, to take immediate and strategic actions to address the food crisis. “Strategic interventions are needed to mitigate this growing crisis and protect the nation’s food security,” he urged.
Additionally, the senator appealed to Nigerians to support President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda, which aims to foster sustainable economic growth and long-term prosperity for the country.
