A joint security team comprising the Nigeria Police and members of the Sokoto State Community Guard successfully foiled a kidnap attempt by gunmen suspected to be armed bandits along the Goronyo-Sabon highway in Sokoto State. The incident occurred at Kwanar Mahalba, located in the troubled eastern senatorial district of the state.
During the operation, the security forces rescued seven passengers, including children, from the clutches of the bandits. However, other passengers managed to flee into the bush before the arrival of security personnel. Tragically, one passenger was shot and killed by the bandits during the attack.
The rescued victims were later presented to Sokoto State’s Deputy Governor, Muhammad Idris Gobir, who commended the swift response of the security operatives. Gobir highlighted that in the past four days, the joint patrol team has managed to rescue a total of 63 victims from the hands of bandits.
He outlined the breakdown of the rescues: 24 victims were freed on Sunday, 39 on Monday, and seven more on Wednesday. The Deputy Governor assured the public that efforts to combat the activities of terrorists, particularly members of the Lakurawa group, are being intensified. He also confirmed that additional security measures are being implemented in areas known to harbor Lakurawa terrorists in collaboration with the Federal Government.
