Jonathan Urges Peace and Fairness Ahead of Edo Governorship Election

Former President Goodluck Jonathan has called on all political actors and stakeholders to prioritize peace and security as Nigeria prepares for the Edo governorship election this Saturday.

In a statement released by his Media Adviser, Ikechukwu Eze, Jonathan emphasized the importance of deepening democracy by ensuring a free and fair electoral atmosphere.

He acknowledged the significance of civil rule in the Fourth Republic, which has endured for 25 years, but warned that democracy loses its value when citizens cannot freely express their political choices. Jonathan urged politicians to engage in lawful activities that promote stability and refrain from actions that could disrupt the peace in Edo State.

The former president also called on state institutions, particularly the police and the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), to uphold neutrality and create a level playing field for the election. He stated, “Security agencies must conduct themselves in optimal neutrality and avoid actions that could compromise the electoral process’s credibility.”

He underscored the need for INEC to inspire confidence among all stakeholders through a transparent voting process, noting that a loss of faith in elections could lead to political disputes, social unrest, and voter apathy.

Jonathan concluded by stressing that for democracy to endure, the leadership recruitment process must be free from manipulation, with state institutions ensuring peaceful and transparent elections.

This commitment will empower citizens to choose leaders who can provide good governance, peace, and prosperity for the nation.
