As the rainy season intensifies, the Kaduna State Emergency Management Agency (KADSEMA) has issued a critical warning to residents in flood-prone areas to relocate to safer zones to avoid potential flooding.
In a statement released by KADSEMA’s Executive Secretary, Usman Mazadu, the agency highlighted that seven local government areas (LGAs) are at heightened risk of flooding, particularly in communities situated along waterways, due to the anticipated heavy rainfall.
Mazadu noted that the recent torrential downpours, experienced from Sunday, August 18, through Monday, August 19, have raised concerns about river overflows, which could pose serious risks to residents in the affected regions. The agency emphasized the need for vigilance among communities located near rivers and tributaries, urging them to prepare for possible evacuation to higher and safer grounds.
The specific LGAs identified at risk include:
1. **Kaduna North LGA**: Areas near Government Secondary School Abubakar Kigo Road, LEA Primary School Unguwan Rimi.
2. **Kaduna South LGA**: Namadi Sambo Skill Acquisition Centre Tudun Wada, LEA Primary School Nassarawa.
3. **Chikun LGA**: Government Secondary School Narayi.
4. **Igabi LGA**: Areas around Jumaat Mosque Hayin Malam Bello.
5. **Sanga LGA**: LEA Agwom Primary School, LEA Tsauni Primary School, and LEA Sanga Village Primary School.
6. **Kagarko LGA**: LEA Jere North Primary School, LEA Jere South Primary School.
7. **Jema’a LGA**: Government Secondary School Kafanchan.
KADSEMA’s alert underscores the importance of prompt action and preparedness as the heavy rains continue, advising all those in vulnerable areas to prioritize their safety by moving to designated safer locations. The agency’s proactive stance is aimed at minimizing the impact of potential floods and ensuring the well-being of Kaduna State residents.
