Kano Governor Abba Yusuf Bans Teachers from Assigning Students Manual Labor

Kano State Governor, Abba Yusuf has issued a strong warning to teachers prohibiting them from involving students in any form of manual labor, both on and off school grounds.

The governor’s directive, communicated through a statement by his spokesperson, Sunusi Dawakin-Tofa on Sunday, aims to ensure that schools remain focused on providing quality education and moral guidance rather than assigning physical tasks to students.

This warning came after an unscheduled visit by Governor Yusuf to the School for Arabic Studies in Kano, where he discovered students engaged in digging a toilet pipeline. Visibly displeased by this sight, the governor immediately questioned the headmaster about the decision to assign such labor to students.

In response, the headmaster explained that the students had been given the task after school hours. However, Governor Yusuf swiftly ordered that the practice be halted with immediate effect.

The governor assured the school management that his administration would prioritize the renovation of dilapidated school buildings, including the mosque located within the premises. He also directed that any school projects be submitted for review and approval by the Ministry of Education or directly to his office before execution.

Additionally, Yusuf inspected ongoing reconstruction work at the Kano Printing Press, which had been damaged during the End-Bad-Governance protests. He instructed the contractor to ensure that all structures meet the required government standards, expressing concern that some of the work did not align with the specified contract terms.
