Kano orders closure of MDAs accounts over ‘financial irregularities’

The Kano state government has ordered the closure of all accounts of its ministries, departments, and agencies (MDAs) “to prevent financial misconduct and ensure transparency”.

The governor of the state Abba Yusuf disclosed this at a meeting held at the Kano Government House on Wednesday.

The governor declared the closure of all accounts held by the state’s ministries, departments, and agencies (MDAs), with the intention of consolidating these accounts into a single treasury account.

This move is driven by the governor’s concerns over “financial irregularities” observed under the current system.

Governor Yusuf emphasized that this step is crucial for maintaining proper oversight and accountability in the handling of public funds.

The governor also issued a stern warning to MDAs, stating that non-compliance with this new directive would result in legal action against the defaulting entities.

Additionally, Zayyid Abubakar, the chairman of the Kano State Internal Revenue Service (KIRS), introduced a revamped tax collection strategy designed to complement the unified treasury account system. Abubakar highlighted that this new system is expected to enhance revenue collection for Kano State and reduce the risk of fund misappropriation.

The meeting was attended by high-ranking officials, including Shehu Sagagi, the governor’s chief of staff, senior ministers, and representatives from the banking sector.
