Kano panel seeks evidence on hunger protest

The Kano State Government has launched a judicial commission of inquiry to investigate the recent violence, destruction, and looting that occurred during the #Endbadgovernance protests from August 1 to 10.

This commission, composed of 14 members and chaired by retired Justice Lawan Mohammed, aims to examine the causes and extent of the unrest and provide recommendations to prevent future incidents.

The protests, initially peaceful, escalated into violence with significant damage. Public and private properties were destroyed, including the state High Court, where six justices’ offices were vandalized and sensitive legal files stolen. Other targeted sites included Nigeria’s oldest printing press and the ICT centre of the Nigerian Communications Commission.

Governor Abba Yusuf, who inaugurated the commission, emphasized that while the protests began as legitimate expressions of discontent, they were later overtaken by armed individuals who attacked the peaceful protesters. He reaffirmed the government’s support for peaceful protest while condemning the violence that ensued.

Justice Lawan Mohammed, during the commission’s inaugural meeting, called for public cooperation in providing evidence and facts that would aid the inquiry. He also requested media support to ensure objective and accurate reporting of the commission’s activities.

The commission is tasked with gathering evidence, analyzing the causes of the unrest, and making recommendations to help restore order and prevent similar incidents in the future.
