Kano state allocates N16.6 billion to agriculture and food security

The Kano State Government has allocated a substantial N16.6 billion for the agricultural sector in its 2025 budget, with the goal of enhancing food security, improving agricultural productivity, and ultimately boosting the income levels of its citizens.

This strategic investment reflects the state’s commitment to strengthening its agricultural framework, ensuring a more sustainable and prosperous future for its people.

Alhaji Musa Shanono, the Commissioner for Budget and Economic Planning, provided these details during the breakdown of the 2025 budget on Thursday. Shanono emphasized that the government is prioritizing the agricultural sector as a key area for economic development and poverty alleviation.

The allocation is designed to foster growth in agriculture, which remains a critical pillar of Kano’s economy, and to address the various challenges facing farmers, rural communities, and the broader food system.

A significant portion of the budget, N3 billion, has been earmarked for the construction of the Dansoshiya Dam, which has a capacity of 3.1 billion liters. This large-scale infrastructure project is expected to play a vital role in improving water supply for agricultural activities, ensuring that farmers have access to reliable irrigation.

Additionally, the funding will support the creation of flowing channels, enhancing water distribution and reducing the impact of droughts on crop yields, particularly in regions prone to water scarcity.
