The 372 Youth Empowerment Network, a pan-Nigerian youth organization with members from all ethnic groups across the country, has expressed support for the release of Mazi Nnamdi Kanu, the detained leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB). Contrary to concerns that his release might cause division, the group believes that Kanu’s freedom would contribute to national unity and peace.
In an open letter to President Bola Tinubu, the organization argued that releasing Kanu, especially in this period, would be a “political masterstroke” that could foster lasting peace in the South Eastern states and beyond. The letter was signed by the group’s National President, Mohammed Saidu; Secretary, Toyin Deinde Komolafe; National Coordinator, Chidi Nwogwugwu; and North East Coordinator, Danjuma Abubakar Umar.
The letter emphasized: “Our call for the release of Nnamdi Kanu is grounded in our firm belief that it is time to heal the wounds of the past, forgive one another, and move forward as a united, indivisible Nigeria.” The group acknowledged past mistakes but stressed that it was time to embrace forgiveness, brotherhood, and national reconciliation.
The organization urged President Tinubu to use his position as “father of the nation” to facilitate Kanu’s release, thus demonstrating his democratic values and affection for the Igbo people, in particular.
The group also highlighted the critical moment in Nigeria’s history, calling for unity in the face of challenges such as war, criminality, sectionalism, tribalism, religious bigotry, and division. The 372 Youth Empowerment Network believes that all hands must be on deck to secure a peaceful and prosperous future for the country.
Since his extraordinary rendition from Kenya in June 2021, Kanu has been in solitary confinement. The group’s appeal for his release reflects their desire for national healing and a united Nigeria.
