Kemi Nandap Appointed Chair of ECOWAS Heads of Immigration Forum

The Comptroller General of the Nigeria Immigration Service Kemi Nandap, has been appointed as the chair of the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) heads of immigration forum.

This significant development occurred during a recent meeting held in Banjul, Gambia, where representatives from member states gathered to discuss migration and mobility challenges within the sub-region. Notably, delegates from Burkina Faso, Mali, and Niger Republic were absent from the meeting.

The forum focused on the theme “Acceleration of the implementation of the ECOWAS National Biometric Identity Card (ENBIC) and the abolishment of the 90-day stay limit/residence permits for community citizens.” The ENBIC is set to replace the ECOWAS travel certificate and residence permit, aiming to simplify and enhance movement, residence, and business rights across member states, all while maintaining national security.

In a statement issued by the spokesperson for the Nigeria Immigration Service Kenneth Udo, Nandap emphasized the urgency for member states to expedite the implementation of these vital policies. She asserted that these changes are essential for promoting regional integration and socio-economic advancement.

During her address, Nandap acknowledged the progress made thus far but also pointed out pressing challenges, including irregular migration, human trafficking, and border security issues, which have been intensified by the region’s extensive borders. She advocated for a coordinated and harmonized approach to border management and immigration practices to ensure both security and the protection of citizens’ rights.

The meeting concluded with the adoption of a comprehensive roadmap outlining the pillars to be pursued in implementing the agreed-upon resolutions, marking a critical step forward in enhancing immigration policies and cooperation within ECOWAS.
