Kendrick Lamar set to become first rapper to solo headline Super Bowl halftime show
Kendrick Lamar is set to break new ground in music history as the first solo rapper to headline a Super Bowl halftime show.
The announcement, made jointly by the National Football League (NFL), Roc Nation, and Apple Music on Sunday, reveals that the acclaimed rapper will take center stage at the 2025 Super Bowl halftime show on February 9th in New Orleans.
Jay-Z, founder of Roc Nation, praised Lamar’s selection, stating, “Kendrick is truly a once-in-a-generation artist and performer. He has an unparalleled ability to define and influence culture globally. His work transcends music, and his impact will be felt for years to come.”
In response to the announcement, Lamar expressed his intention to showcase the enduring influence of rap music. “Rap music is still the most impactful genre to date. And I’ll be there to remind the world why. They got the right one,” Lamar said.
Lamar previously performed during the 2022 Super Bowl halftime show as part of the event’s first-ever hip-hop showcase. His upcoming headline performance marks a significant milestone in the genre’s history.
This major achievement for Lamar comes amid his ongoing public feud with Drake, who has previously boasted in his music about being as influential as the Super Bowl.
Lamar’s solo headlining gig will certainly draw attention as he seeks to solidify rap’s prominence on one of the world’s biggest stages.
