Kibet and Hirpa Triumph at 2025 Access Bank Lagos City Marathon, Dominating East African Runners

The 2025 Access Bank Lagos City Marathon, a 42km spectacle, once again saw East African runners dominate the competition, with Kenya and Ethiopia leading the charge.

Kenya’s Edwin Kibet triumphed in the men’s category, finishing the race in an impressive 2:14:06 to take home the $50,000 prize. This victory marks his second win in the competition, having previously claimed the title in 2023. Kibet’s triumph this year is a significant improvement from his third-place finish last year, where fellow Kenyan Bernard Sang took the top spot with a time of 2:16:49.

In the women’s category, Ethiopia’s Guta Meseret Hirpa emerged victorious with a time of 2:37:04, securing her first win in the competition.

Among the Nigerian runners, Nyango Gyang Boyi made history as the first Nigerian to finish in the top 10, crossing the finish line in 8th place with a time of 2:25:41. His strong performance earned him a $4,000 prize and the N2 million top prize in the Nigerian category.

The marathon, which began at Western Avenue near the National Stadium in Surulere, culminated at Eko Atlantic City in Victoria Island, attracting thousands of participants. The event has grown significantly, earning a prestigious gold label from World Athletics in 2023, less than eight years after its inaugural edition.

Lagos State Governor, Babajide Sanwo-Olu, also took part in the race, adding to the event’s prominence. His participation further demonstrated the city’s commitment to promoting sports and wellness.

The 2025 Access Bank Lagos City Marathon once again showcased the thrilling energy and world-class talent that has become synonymous with the annual event.
