The Kwara State Government has issued a strong advisory urging residents to take the recent flood alerts and precautionary measures seriously.
In a statement released on Tuesday, Commissioner for Communication, Bola Olukoju, emphasized the importance of public awareness regarding flooding and the steps being taken to mitigate its impacts, particularly in flood-prone areas.
Olukoju noted that various government agencies have been actively conducting public enlightenment programs aimed at educating communities about flood risks and effective mitigation strategies. These initiatives, which include broadcasts via local radio stations and engagement with community leaders, are ongoing. The government has also undertaken measures to desilt drainages and improve water passage systems within the metropolis to alleviate potential flooding threats.
In riverine communities such as Patigi and Edu, traditional leaders have been proactive in advising residents in vulnerable areas to relocate to designated safer locations. “We appeal to our people to follow this important advisory, as the government is committed to supporting them in various ways,” she stated.
Additionally, the state government has reiterated its call for the dredging of the River Niger, which is seen as a long-term solution to the recurring flooding challenges in the region. The Nigeria Meteorological Agency (NIMET) has identified Patigi, Edu, Moro, Kaiama, and Ilorin East local government areas as particularly susceptible to flooding. Recently, NIMET also warned that several states, including Kwara, would experience three consecutive days of heavy rain accompanied by thunderstorms starting Tuesday.
The Kwara State Government remains dedicated to protecting its residents and minimizing the adverse effects of flooding through ongoing awareness campaigns and infrastructural improvements. Residents are encouraged to stay informed and adhere to all safety guidelines issued by authorities.
