Labour Party Crisis Deepens as Youth Leaders Disown Abure and Ahanotu

The internal crisis within the Labour Party (LP) has escalated as the Forum of National Youth Leaders of Political Parties (FNYLPP) has publicly disowned Julius Abure and Kennedy Ahanotu, the national chairman and national youth leader, respectively.

In a statement released on Sunday, the Forum highlighted allegations of tenure expiration and other irregularities concerning Abure’s leadership, which has faced scrutiny since his term expired on June 8, 2024.

Spokesperson for the Forum Eragbe Anselm Aphimia, said, ” Kennedy Ahanotu, the Deputy National Secretary of the Labour Party (LP), is hereby warned to desist from presenting himself as the National Youth Leader of the Labour Party, or else face consequences.” He further urged Abure to stop claiming the title of National Chairman, citing the expiration of their tenures.

The Forum pointed out that during a National Executive Council (NEC) meeting on September 4, 2024, Esther Nenadi Usman and Darlington Nwokocha were appointed as Chairperson and Secretary, respectively, to lead a 29-member Labour Party Caretaker Committee tasked with organizing congresses for the upcoming National Convention in 2025.

Additionally, the Forum endorsed  Halimat Tejuosho for the position of Honourable Minister of Humanitarian Affairs and Poverty Alleviation, further complicating the party’s internal dynamics.
