The Organised Labour has strongly condemned the declaration of a state of emergency in Rivers State, warning of potential disruptions to national economic activities if the decision is not reversed promptly.
In a joint statement, the leaders of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC), Trade Union Congress (TUC), and Joint Negotiation Council (JNC) criticized the suspension of elected officials, including Governor Siminalayi Fubara, calling it premature and unconstitutional. They argued that the move undermines democracy and has caused immediate hardship, particularly for local government workers who have not received their salaries.
The labour unions raised concerns about the economic impact, stressing that the state of emergency could worsen Nigeria’s already strained economy, citing inflation, devaluation, and rising unemployment. They also warned that political instability has deterred investors, damaging the state’s revenue and long-term development prospects.
While acknowledging the need for law and order, the unions insisted that actions must align with the Nigerian Constitution. They urged the federal government to reverse the state of emergency and engage in dialogue with stakeholders to avoid further escalation.
The Organised Labour warned they would take decisive action if their demands are not met, potentially disrupting national economic activities.
