Lagos Assembly Crisis Escalates as Obasa Seeks Legal Redress, Meranda’s Leadership Faces New Challenges

Thirty-five lawmakers from the Lagos State House of Assembly, who are in support of Mudashiru Obasa’s removal as Speaker, have arrived at the Lagos State High Court for the hearing of a case filed by Obasa himself. The former speaker, who was ousted by at least 36 of his colleagues on January 13, 2025, is challenging his removal in court.

In his application, filed on February 12, 2025, Obasa claims that his ouster was unconstitutional as it occurred while he was abroad. His lawyer, Afolabi Fashanu (SAN), is representing him in the case. The hearing is a significant development in the ongoing legal and political battle over the leadership of the Assembly.

The legal team representing Speaker Mojisola Meranda includes prominent figures such as lead counsel Tayo Oyetibo (SAN), along with several other legal heavyweights including Olu Daramola (SAN),  Femi Falana (SAN), Muiz Banire (SAN), Abimbola Akeredolu (SAN), Dada Awosika (SAN), Dayo Amokaye (SAN), Mofe Oyetibo (SAN), Olumide Oyewole, and Wunmi Okeremi. As of the latest report, the lawmakers have taken their seats in preparation for the hearing.

Meanwhile, tensions have further intensified following a recent incident described by the House as an “invasion.” On Thursday, Obasa, accompanied by three other members, attempted to convene a plenary session, which the House deemed unsanctioned. The statement issued by the House clarified that such a session could only occur if several procedural requirements were met, including a formal notice to all members, a quorum, an approved agenda, and the presence of the mace an essential symbol of legislative authority. With only five out of the 40 members present, the session was deemed unconstitutional and without any legislative effect.

The statement, delivered by House spokesman Hon. Steve Ogundipe, condemned Obasa’s actions and reaffirmed the House’s commitment to upholding the integrity of the legislature. It emphasized that the House remains steadfast in protecting democratic governance and continuing its work for the betterment of Lagos State. The House also reaffirmed its support for Speaker Mojisola Meranda, dismissing any speculation about her resignation as unfounded. “She remains firmly in office and enjoys the confidence and support of 36 colleagues,” the statement said.

Additionally, the House expressed its alignment with the leadership of the All Progressives Congress (APC), working toward a peaceful resolution of any misunderstandings. The lawmakers remain committed to serving the interests of Lagosians, despite the ongoing crisis. The escalating tensions within the House of Assembly, coupled with legal battles and political maneuvering, indicate that this leadership struggle is far from over.
