Lagos, Chinese Company Sign MoU On 50 MW Solar Power For LASU, Other Institutions

The Lagos State Government has announced a significant new partnership with a Chinese company to implement solar power systems across several key educational institutions. This development was unveiled by Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu during the ongoing Africa-China Cooperation Summit (#FOCAC2024) in Beijing, where President Bola Tinubu is leading the Nigerian delegation on a state visit to China.

The Memorandum of Understanding (MoU), signed by Governor Sanwo-Olu, outlines a major initiative to deploy approximately 50 megawatts (MW) of clean and affordable solar electricity. The project will focus on installing solar power systems at Lagos State University of Science and Technology, Lagos State University of Education, and Lagos State College of Medicine.

Governor Sanwo-Olu highlighted that this initiative aims to reduce the institutions’ dependence on grid electricity and fossil fuels, thereby advancing environmental sustainability. He emphasized that the project is a key component of Lagos State’s broader economic development strategy, underlining the state’s commitment to integrating sustainable energy solutions.

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, who witnessed the signing ceremony, endorsed the project and noted its importance in advancing Nigeria’s energy transition. He praised the partnership as a step towards Lagos State’s goal of becoming a leader in renewable energy adoption within Nigeria.

The President emphasized that such collaborations are crucial for enhancing the state’s energy security and reducing its carbon footprint.
