The Lagos State Ministry of Transportation has collaborated with Huawei Technologies to set up four new Intelligent Transport System (ITS) sites to monitor traffic and speed violations.
These installations will complement existing Automatic Number Plate Recognition cameras and Traffic Management Solution devices.
During a press briefing on Thursday, Transportation Commissioner Oluwaseun Osiyemi revealed that two of the sites are speed detection points: one located on Ogudu Road at Alapere with a speed limit of 80km/h, and another on Mobolaji Bank Anthony Way at Nitel with a limit of 60km/h.
The remaining sites, known as e-police stations, are positioned at Allen Avenue Road Junction and Nurudeen Olowopopo Road. These sites are equipped to detect various traffic violations, including running red lights, improper lane changes, illegal U-turns, and reverse driving on highways.
The new system imposes fines of N20,000 for running red lights and N50,000 for speeding violations. Enforcement is immediate, with violators receiving SMS notifications from the Vehicle Inspection Service that detail their offenses and the corresponding fines.
Osiyemi emphasized that the system is not meant to be punitive but to promote responsible driving and reduce road accidents. “The goal is clear: save lives, protect property, and maintain an orderly transport system,” he said.
The briefing was attended by several officials, including Innovation, Science, and Technology Commissioner Olatunbosun Alake, Transportation Ministry Permanent Secretary Olawale Musa, representatives from Huawei Technologies, and key ministry directors.
