The Lagos Environmental Sanitation Corps has uncovered a warehouse illegally storing banned styrofoam packs in Ikeja.
The operation took place at No. 6 Ogusefunmi Street, off Nurudeen Street, Anifowoshe, following a tip-off from a whistleblower.
In a post on X, Tokunbo Wahab, Commissioner for the Ministry of the Environment and Water Resources, confirmed the discovery. He stated, “Following a tip-off by a whistleblower, Lagos State Ministry of the Environment and Water Resources discovered another warehouse at No. 6 Ogusefunmi Street, off Nurudeen Street, Anifowoshe, Ikeja. The building is being used for storing the banned styrofoam packs. The operatives of the Lagos Environmental Sanitation Corps have confiscated the packs.”
The confiscation occurred on September 24, 2024, as part of ongoing efforts by the Lagos State Government to enforce a ban on the use and distribution of styrofoam and other single-use plastics, which was implemented in January 2024.
Wahab highlighted the environmental dangers posed by non-biodegradable materials like styrofoam, commonly used for disposable plates in eateries.
The ministry is actively targeting illegal storage and sales of banned items to combat environmental pollution and protect the state’s ecological integrity.
