The Lagos State Government has mandated that all approved gates and barriers on public roads, especially in the Lekki area, must remain fully open for public access between 5:00 AM and 10:00 PM daily.
This directive follows observations by the Lagos State Ministry of Transportation regarding the rise of unauthorized gates and the mismanagement of approved ones, which hinder traffic flow, emergency access, and public safety.
In a statement issued on Monday, the Ministry outlined new guidelines for gated streets across the state.
The Ministry emphasized that gates or barriers installed without prior approval are illegal and will be removed. Approved gates must strictly adhere to operational timelines and should be manned by security personnel employed by the Community Development Associations (CDAs) to ensure compliance and enhance security.
While gates may remain closed between 10:00 PM and 5:00 AM, the Ministry clarified that they must be opened immediately in emergencies to allow unrestricted access for first responders. Non-compliance with these regulations will result in penalties, including fines and enforcement actions.
The Lagos State Government also stressed its position on unauthorized gates and barriers, noting that they disrupt traffic, delay emergency responses, and compromise public safety.
The Ministry called on residents and CDAs, particularly in Lekki, to comply with these regulations to improve traffic flow, ensure public safety, and maintain accessibility for all road users.
