Lagos, Kaduna protest grounds deserted on day six
Six days into the 10-day nationwide hunger strike, demonstrators have avoided some areas of the states of Lagos and Kaduna.
Many Nigerians, particularly young people, have participated in the demonstrations under the hashtag #EndBadGovernanceInNigeria, calling on the administration of President Bola Tinubu to lessen the country’s inhabitants’ economic suffering.
There was a presence of security agencies on the ground as business activities resumed in the Ojota area of Lagos State, however there was no sign of protesters at the Gani Fawehinmi Freedom Park.
Also, in Kaduna State, protesters were absent as shops, filling stations and markets were also shut as of Tuesday.
The Sheikh Abubakar Gumi central market in the state capital was also deserted.
Under the direction of Governor Uba Sani, the Kaduna State Security Council enforced a 24-hour curfew on the towns of Kaduna and Zaria as well as the surrounding areas.
This choice was made in response to an assessment of the state’s security conditions, which showed that criminal groups involved in looting and property destruction had taken over the protests.
In Kano, Kaduna, Katsina, and Bauchi states, demonstrators were arrested by the Nigeria Police Force for flying Russian flags. This action has been classified as treasonable by Chief of Defence Staff Gen. Christopher Musa.
