Lagos, Ogun Collaborate To End Open Defecation Along Lagos/Ibadan Expressway

To put an end to open defecation along the Lagos/Ibadan expressway, the Lagos State Environmental Protection Agency is collaborating with the Ogun State Environmental Protection Agency (OGEPA).

In an X statement on Wednesday, LASG Commissioner  of the Ministry of the Environment and Water Resources stated that the collaborative media campaign specifically targets the median running from OPIC Plaza to Otedola Bridge.

According to him, the effort aims to stop the spread of infectious diseases like cholera to improve environmental sustainability and public health.

The important corridor, which serves as a gateway to Lagos, is also to be made aesthetically pleasing again.

The campaign was led by the General Manager of the Lagos State Environmental Protection Agency (LASEPA), Babatunde Ajayi.

Ajayi emphasized how critical it is to educate locals about the health hazards connected to open defecation.

He emphasized the risks associated with cholera and other waterborne illnesses, particularly during the rainy season when there is a greater chance of water contamination.

To guarantee the campaign’s long-term effects, Ajayi revealed that pertinent parties will be involved in keeping an eye out for infractions.

On his part, Special Adviser to the Ogun State Governor on Environmental Protection Matters, Oluwadare Kehinde commended LASEPA for spearheading the campaign.

He highlighted the necessity of inter-state collaboration in addressing environmental challenges, stating, “This initiative sets a strong precedent for how we can work together to tackle common issues.”

He also mentioned that Ogun State is collaborating with international organisations to construct more public toilets, ultimately working toward the complete elimination of open defecation.

The combined campaign of the states of Lagos and Ogun is an initiative to prevent open defecation and enhance public health. It shows that both governments are dedicated to making the environment healthier and more hygienic.
