Lagos State Generates $71.6 Million from Tourism and Entertainment During ‘Detty December’
The Lagos State Government has revealed that over $71.6 million in revenue was generated from tourism, hospitality, and entertainment during the 2024 ‘Detty December’ festivities. This impressive figure underscores the state’s growing reputation as a leading cultural and entertainment hub in Africa.
According to a report by MO Africa Consulting, the revenue breakdown shows that hotels contributed over $44 million, while short-let apartments added $13 million. The findings were praised by Idris Aregbe, Special Adviser to Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu on Tourism, Arts, and Culture, during a stakeholder review of the Lagos State Detty December 2024/2025 Report.
The ‘Detty December’ season, synonymous with Lagos’ vibrancy, showcased a variety of events that highlighted Nigeria’s rich cultural heritage. Major attractions included the Mrs Universe Africa event, Greater Lagos Fiesta, Spotify Wrapped Concert, African Fashion Week, Rhythm Unplugged, The La Vida Experience, Joeboy Live, and culinary and cultural exhibitions.
These events attracted massive crowds, ranging from local residents and members of the Nigerian diaspora, fondly referred to as “IJGBs” (I Just Got Back), to international tourists eager to experience Lagos’ dynamic energy and cultural diversity.
Reflecting on the success of the celebrations, Aregbe stated, “Tourism remains a vital driver of economic growth and cultural preservation for Lagos State, with the ‘Ember’ season playing a key role. This period represents unity, vibrancy, and celebration, fueled by the dynamic spirit of Lagosians.”
Aregbe highlighted the significant economic impact of the festivities, attributing it to the resilience and ingenuity of Lagosians across various sectors. From artisans in local markets to entrepreneurs in the entertainment and tourism industries, their efforts have cemented Lagos’ reputation as a global cultural destination.
“The participation of residents, visitors from other states, and international tourists has been fundamental in establishing Lagos as a cultural and tourism hub,” he noted.
The Sanwo-Olu administration’s dedication to blending tradition with creativity was also commended, with Aregbe praising both Governor Sanwo-Olu and Deputy Governor Dr. Obafemi Hamzat for their unwavering support in developing Lagos as a premier tourism destination.
Looking ahead, Aregbe announced that insights from the 2024 season would inform the “Lagos Tourism is Rising” campaign for 2025. The initiative aims to build on the successes achieved so far, further positioning Lagos as a key player in global tourism and entertainment.
“From the vibrant events to the economic benefits, ‘Detty December’ has once again proven why Lagos is Africa’s cultural heartbeat. We are committed to ensuring that the momentum continues in the coming years,” Aregbe added.
With its unique blend of culture, creativity, and resilience, Lagos continues to shine as a beacon of tourism and entertainment, driving economic growth and fostering cultural preservation for generations to come.
