Lagos State Government Condemns “Unprovoked Attack” on Environmental Sanitation Corps by Nigerian Army

The Lagos State Government has strongly condemned the “unprovoked attack” on officers of the Environmental Sanitation Corps, known as KAI, by personnel of the Nigerian Army in the Yaba area.

In a statement released on Tuesday, Commissioner for the Environment and Water Resources, Tokunbo Wahab, reported that the incident occurred while KAI officers were lawfully performing their duties. He noted that prompt intervention by the Chief of Army Staff, Lieutenant General T. Lagbaja, and the Director of Chaplain Services, Lt. Col. T.E. Ogbonyomi, helped to de-escalate the situation.

Wahab stated, “Earlier today, officers of the Lagos State Environmental Sanitation Corps (KAI), lawfully engaged in their duties in Yaba, were subjected to an unprovoked attack by personnel of the Nigerian Army under the directive of Major Adebiyi and Captain Gowon.”

He expressed gratitude for the swift action taken by military leadership to support civil authorities, reinforcing the principle that military personnel must respect civil governance.

Wahab emphasized that such attacks on law enforcement would not be tolerated, declaring, “We strongly condemn this unwarranted and unacceptable assault on officers executing their lawful duties. Moving forward, such acts will not be tolerated.”

The commitment to maintaining safety and sanitation standards in Lagos remains firm, as highlighted by Wahab’s message of striving for a #CleanerLagos.

In a related incident from September, a suspect was arrested for allegedly assaulting a civilian staff member of the Lagos State Ministry of Environment and Water Resources while resisting arrest after defecating near the median on the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway.
