The Lagos State Government has appealed for calm following widespread flash floods caused by incessant rainfall across the state early on Wednesday. In a statement, Tokunbo Wahab, the Commissioner for the Environment and Water Resources, detailed the situation and provided guidance for residents.
Wahab noted that Lagos had experienced continuous rainfall for approximately nine hours, exacerbating the effects of heavy rainfall observed daily since last week. This has led to a rise in the level of the Lagos lagoon and subsequent flash floods in areas like Iyana Oworo, connecting to the Third Mainland Bridge, and other parts of the state.
The Commissioner assured residents that the floods would subside once the rains cease and the lagoon levels normalize. He highlighted the deployment of emergency response teams to critical areas such as Iyana Oworo to clear blockages and mitigate flood impacts.
As a precautionary measure, Wahab advised residents in low-lying areas to relocate to higher ground to protect lives and properties. He emphasized the danger of driving through flooded areas, warning that even a foot of flowing water during high tide could sweep away vehicles.
Residents were also urged to stay informed through daily weather reports from the State Ministry of Environment and Water Resources, which provide essential guidance for daily activities. Recognizing Lagos as a coastal city with a significant portion of its landmass submerged, Wahab underscored the importance of environmental awareness and responsibility among residents.
In efforts to manage runoff effectively, the state government has embarked on a comprehensive yearlong maintenance and cleaning program for primary and secondary drainage systems. Additionally, residents were encouraged to maintain cleanliness around their properties and refrain from dumping refuse into drains, stressing the collective benefits of these actions for the community.
Wahab reiterated the government’s commitment to safeguarding lives and enhancing environmental resilience in Lagos, urging collaboration from all residents to mitigate the impacts of heavy rainfall and ensure a safer, cleaner city for all.
