Lagos State Government Warns of Imminent Building Collapse at Mopol 20 Barracks

The Lagos State Government has raised concerns over a potential building collapse at the Mopol 20 Barracks in Onigbongbo, Ikeja.

In response, the Lagos State Emergency Management Agency (LASEMA) is preparing to conduct emergency evacuations and demolitions of the old Block 3 of the barracks.

In a statement released on Wednesday, LASEMA Permanent Secretary Damilola Oke-Osanyintolu detailed the precarious condition of the structure following assessments by the agency’s response team. To ensure public safety, he announced that both the building in question and adjacent structures would be evacuated immediately to prevent any loss of life or property.

“The agency dispatched a response team to the location, and the findings indicate that the building and those adjacent must be evacuated with immediate effect. We are conducting a response plan that includes assessment, safe and orderly evacuation, and controlled demolition,” Oke-Osanyintolu stated.

He emphasized that the decision to carry out a preemptive demolition is under the oversight of the Babajide Olusola Sanwo-Olu administration, given the building’s unstable condition and the risk of secondary incidents.

Oke-Osanyintolu urged residents in the vicinity to remain calm and avoid spreading misinformation on social media. He reassured the public that the situation is being closely monitored and effectively managed.
