Lakurawa Terrorists, not Bandits Responsible for Zamfara Explosion – Police

The police have identified the newly formed terror group Lakurawa as responsible for an explosion along the Dansadau-Gusau Road in Maru Local Government Area, Zamfara State, on Wednesday.

According to Police Commissioner Muhammed Dalijan, the group, which had been dislodged by the military in Sokoto and Kebbi, was attempting to find new hideouts.

The explosion occurred when a motorist unknowingly triggered a bomb planted under a bridge by the insurgents, resulting in the driver’s death and severe injuries to three others. Dalijan explained that members of Lakurawa were seen near the scene shortly before the blast, and the planting of explosive devices marked a new tactic for the region.

He confirmed that local bandits in Zamfara typically lack the ability to make or deploy bombs, reinforcing the belief that Lakurawa was behind the attack.

Zamfara, often referred to as the “hub of banditry” in Nigeria, has been plagued by violent groups involved in kidnappings and ransom demands. Governor Dauda Lawal stated that with the proper political will, the region’s banditry could be effectively tackled within two weeks.

Military authorities have vowed to eliminate Lakurawa and other terror groups like Boko Haram and ISWAP from the region.
