LAMATA Announces 18% Increase in BRT Fares Due to Rising Operational Costs

The Lagos Metropolitan Area Transport Authority (LAMATA) has announced an 18% increase in fares for the Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) services, effective from next week. The fare hike, which will apply across all Bus Reform Initiative (BRI) schemes, comes as a response to rising operational costs and the need to ensure that buses continue to operate smoothly, providing reliable transport for Lagosians.

In a notice posted on Thursday afternoon, LAMATA explained that the price adjustment is essential to maintaining service levels and ensuring that buses remain operational, allowing passengers to continue moving efficiently around the city.

LAMATA also called for the understanding and cooperation of commuters as they adjust to the new fare rates. This fare increase follows the cancellation of the 50% discount on public transport fares, which was lifted in November 2023. The discount, aimed at easing the burden of rising fuel costs, was part of the state government’s efforts to alleviate the effects of the fuel subsidy removal by the federal government.

Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu had also implemented a 25% fare reduction for both state-owned and commercial buses in July 2023 to help mitigate the financial pressure on commuters, further emphasizing the government’s attempts to address the impacts of fuel subsidy reforms.

As the BRT fare hike takes effect, passengers are urged to stay informed and plan accordingly for their travel needs.
