Lassa Fever: NCDC records 14 new cases, three deaths

The Nigeria Centre for Disease Control and Prevention (NCDC) reported 14 new confirmed cases and three deaths from Lassa fever between March 24 and March 30, 2025. The NCDC shared this information in its latest situation report published on Tuesday.

The new cases were spread across five states: Ondo, Bauchi, Taraba, Ebonyi, and Nasarawa. The agency noted that, as of week 13, a total of 122 deaths have been recorded among confirmed Lassa fever cases, resulting in a case fatality rate (CFR) of 18.5%. This is slightly lower than the 18.7% CFR reported during the same period in 2024.

According to the NCDC, 71% of all confirmed Lassa fever cases in 2025 have been reported in just three states: Ondo, Bauchi, and Edo. Ondo accounted for 30% of cases, Bauchi 25%, and Edo 16%. The remaining 29% of cases were spread across 15 other states, with confirmed cases reported in a total of 93 local government areas (LGAs) across 18 states.

The disease continues to predominantly affect individuals aged 21-30 years, with a median age of 30. Men are slightly more affected than women, with a male-to-female ratio of 1:0.8.

No new cases of healthcare worker infections were reported during week 13, marking a positive shift compared to earlier in the year when health workers were affected. However, contact tracing remains active, with 1,277 individuals under follow-up as of week 13.
