In response to a viral video that caused public outrage on social media, the Lagos Waste Management Authority (LAWMA) has clarified the wage structure of its street sweepers.
The video featured a LAWMA worker claiming that sweepers were underpaid and had not received the promised minimum wage of ₦85,000, which quickly sparked widespread criticism.
The worker alleged that sweepers had been consistently receiving ₦30,000, which was recently increased to ₦40,000 in February.
LAWMA, through a statement shared by Jibril Gawat, Special Assistant to Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu on Social Media, defended the wages of the street sweepers and emphasized its commitment to workers’ welfare. The statement clarified that the sweepers are employed by private companies under clearly defined contracts, and these companies are responsible for paying the workers directly.
According to LAWMA, following the recent minimum wage review, street sweepers now earn ₦40,000 per month, while supervisors earn ₦50,000. The agency explained that this wage structure is aligned with the four-hour daily shifts worked by the sweepers.
LAWMA further stated that the wage increase is part of a broader effort to provide workers with financial stability while allowing them the flexibility to engage in other economic activities outside their designated shifts.
The agency reiterated that the success of the street sweeping program depends heavily on the dedication of the workers, and it remains committed to ensuring fair treatment and improving working conditions for its staff.
