Libyan Football Association Addresses Treatment of Nigeria’s Super Eagles at Airport

The Libyan Football Association (LFA) has issued an official statement concerning the mistreatment experienced by Nigeria’s Super Eagles and their delegates upon arrival in Libya. The Nigerian national football team faced significant challenges after their flight was unexpectedly diverted, leading to their arrival at an airport where they were stranded for over 15 hours without adequate provisions or sustenance.

In its statement released on X, the LFA expressed deep concern regarding the incident surrounding the diversion of the Nigerian national team’s flight ahead of the Africa Cup of Nations qualifier. They attributed the difficulties encountered by the Super Eagles to logistical challenges.

“We regret any inconvenience caused,” the statement read. “It is essential to note that such incidents can occur due to routine air traffic control protocols, security checks, or logistical challenges affecting international air travel. These are standard procedures at airports worldwide, and while unfortunate, delays or rerouting are not uncommon.”

The LFA emphasized their respect for Nigeria and reassured the team that the diversion of their flight was unintentional. “There are no grounds to accuse the Libyan security teams or the Libyan Football Federation of deliberately orchestrating this incident. Such actions are inconsistent with our values and principles.”

The statement firmly rejected any claims of foul play or sabotage. The LFA further highlighted that their own national team had faced significant challenges upon arriving in Nigeria for a previous match, yet refrained from making public accusations against Nigerian authorities.

“Football, in its essence, unites nations,” the statement continued, underscoring their commitment to fairness and mutual respect. “We pride ourselves on our hospitality and welcoming nature, always prioritizing the respectful treatment of visiting teams, including our African brothers and other international delegations.”

The LFA expressed hope for a resolution of the misunderstanding with goodwill and understanding, reiterating their commitment to promoting unity, sportsmanship, and friendship in the world of football. They concluded by affirming their open doors to Nigeria and all African teams, emphasizing their dedication to ensuring that all visiting teams feel safe and respected as guests in Libya.
