Liverpool Captain Van Dijk Signs Contract Extension Until 2027

Liverpool captain Virgil van Dijk has signed a new two-year contract, extending his stay at Anfield beyond the end of the current season. The 33-year-old Dutch centre-back, whose previous deal was set to expire this summer, has now committed his future to the club alongside forward Mohamed Salah, who also agreed to a two-year extension last week.

Van Dijk, who was linked with a move to Paris Saint-Germain, made it clear that Liverpool was always his first choice.

“It was always Liverpool. That was the plan from the start,” he said. “There was never any doubt—this is where I want to be, both for myself and my family.”

Named club captain in 2023 following Jordan Henderson’s departure, Van Dijk has made 314 appearances for the Reds since joining from Southampton in January 2018 for £75 million. He has played a pivotal role in Liverpool’s recent success, helping them secure the Premier League, Champions League, FA Cup, Club World Cup, and two EFL Cup titles.

Speaking about the extension, Van Dijk said: “I’m incredibly proud. Someone recently called me an adopted Scouser—it made me feel truly at home. Extending my journey here is amazing.”

Van Dijk’s renewal gives new manager Arne Slot, also Dutch, a solid foundation to build upon as Liverpool push for a record-equalling 20th English league title.

Although Van Dijk had previously admitted uncertainty about his future, he confirmed earlier this month that contract talks had made progress, ultimately leading to the new deal.

With Van Dijk and Salah now secured, attention turns to Trent Alexander-Arnold, whose contract expires in July. The England international, who just returned to training after a month-long injury, has been strongly linked with a move to Real Madrid.
