Liverpool Claim League Cup With 1-0 Extra-Time Victory Over Chelsea

After a thrilling end-to-end match at Wembley on Sunday, Liverpool defeated Chelsea 1-0 in overtime thanks to a late goal from captain Virgil van Dijk to win the League Cup.

In the 118th minute, the Dutchman Van Dijk stood up to meet a corner and nodded home in front of applauding Liverpool supporters.

Through ninety minutes, both teams had plenty of opportunities.

Following extensive VAR examinations, goals were disallowed for both teams: Van Dijk’s header in the second half was disallowed for a foul committed by Wataru Endo, while Raheem Sterling’s goal for Chelsea in the first half was canceled out due to Nicolas Jackson’s offside in the build-up.

Both teams also hit the post, Liverpool’s Cody Gakpo in the first half and Chelsea’s Conor Gallagher in the second.

It was the third Cup victory for Juergen Klopp’s Liverpool over Chelsea in two years, the Reds winning the League and FA Cups in 2022 after goalless draws and penalty shootouts.
