Low Turnout Recorded in Delta State Rerun Election
The Delta State House of Assembly, Ethiopia-West Constituency rerun election on Saturday was hampered by poor voter participation in all of the polling places and wards.
In the Ethiope-West Local Government Area, residents of Oghara, Mosogar, and Jesse Communities were seen going about their daily lives. Voter apathy was prevalent despite the presence of security guards and INEC ad hoc workers at the different polling places and wards visited.
In an interview, the INEC Electoral Officer in Ethiope-West Local Government Area of Delta State, Beauty Ibiama, said sensitive election materials were distributed to the various polling stations as early as 6 a.m., pointing out that voting had commenced since 8:30am.
Ibiama explained that the people who were seen going about their businesses are in the areas where elections did not hold.
She said INEC covered five wards, including Mosogar I&II, Jesse V and Oghara I and II in the ongoing rerun election.
She also confirmed that there have been no reported cases of ballot snatching or electoral violence, to the best of her knowledge, as far as the ongoing election is concerned.
