Maiduguri: Residents Return Home as Floodwaters Recede

Residents of various communities in Maiduguri hit by the floods which ravaged the State on Tuesday, have started returning to their homes.

The residents were sacked from their homes after floodwaters submerged their property in the aftermath of the collapse of the Alau Dam.

With the state government already setting up Internally Displaced camps and relevant agencies making provision for the emergency, the residents said they were eager to return to their homes.

One of the residents said he and his family had slept outside and would like to go home to ascertain the damage caused by the flood.

A flood victim Ali Bana said, “We are just rushing to see what is left of our homes and to salvage any remnants of our property we can still use.”

In a statement by the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) said that over 200,000 people were displaced by the flood.

According to the agency, several children are missing while many are unaccounted for.
