After Manchester United’s FA Cup exit to Fulham, boss Ruben Amorim emphasized that the club’s main focus should be a return to the Premier League summit, despite the ongoing struggles and frustrations this season.
Currently sitting 14th in the Premier League, 34 points behind leaders Liverpool, United’s trophy hopes are all but dashed after the penalty defeat. However, Amorim remains determined to rebuild and lead the team to the ultimate goal: winning the Premier League once again, a title United haven’t claimed since 2013.
“The goal is to win the Premier League, so I know that we are losing games and losing trophies during this season, but the goal is to win the Premier League again,” Amorim said, reflecting on the long-term vision for United’s revival.
“I don’t know how long it’s going to take, but that is our goal. If you think like that, we can suffer a little bit in these defeats, a lot sometimes, but we have a goal so we continue forward no matter what.”
While the idea of United reclaiming dominance in English football may seem distant given their current form—Amorim has won just five of his 16 league games in charge—he remains optimistic. “It’s impossible to know (how long it will take),” he acknowledged, but he believes there’s progress. “But you start understanding.
I think the players are better, we understand better the league, we know what to do with the squad, what is the future, and we’ll see in the future.”
With the FA Cup out of the picture, United’s immediate focus shifts to the Europa League, their last remaining chance for silverware this season. Amorim’s men face a tough last-16 tie against Real Sociedad, and the exhaustion from a grueling 120-minute match against Fulham hasn’t made things easier.
“It’s really important, but we have to recover the players, try to push for the other players that are out because they were really tired,” Amorim added, signaling the need for both physical and mental recovery ahead of their European challenge.
For now, it’s all about regrouping and focusing on the Europa League, while continuing to build towards a long-term vision of Premier League glory, however challenging that path may be.
