Mark Carney Set to Be Sworn in as Canada’s New Prime Minister on Friday

In a historic moment, former central banker Mark Carney will officially take the oath as Canada’s 30th Prime Minister this Friday morning, alongside his newly appointed cabinet, as confirmed by the Governor General’s office on Wednesday.

Carney’s transition into political leadership comes after a seamless rise to the top of the Liberal Party, a party he now leads following a decisive victory in Sunday’s leadership race, where he earned an overwhelming 86% of the vote from more than 150,000 party members.

His swift political ascent at the age of 59 is a striking contrast to his extensive career in global finance, where he led both the Bank of Canada and the Bank of England.

Marking a significant shift for the Liberal Party, Carney’s leadership promises to be bold, as he steps in to replace Justin Trudeau, who announced his resignation after nearly a decade in office.

Carney’s entry into politics, fueled by a desire to address Canada’s most pressing challenges, comes at a time when tensions with the United States are high, especially in the realm of trade.

During his victory speech, Carney delivered a powerful message, unshaken by U.S. pressures: “In trade, just like in hockey, Canada will always come out on top.”

On Wednesday, Carney emphasized his readiness to engage in direct talks with U.S. President Donald Trump to renew trade agreements, signaling a proactive approach to easing economic friction.

With the U.S. imposing a 25% tariff on Canadian steel and aluminum imports, Carney’s swift reaction and commitment to negotiating a fairer deal will define his early political agenda.

As Carney steps into the role of Prime Minister, all eyes will be on how he navigates both domestic and international challenges, setting the stage for a new chapter in Canada’s political landscape.
