The political drama surrounding the Lagos State House of Assembly took another twist on Monday as the embattled ousted Speaker, Mudashiru Obasa, made a dramatic return to the Assembly complex.
Obasa, who was impeached by lawmakers in January while on a trip to the United States, joined forces with several lawmakers for a critical meeting held outside the main chamber of the Assembly.
The incumbent Speaker, Mojisola Meranda, was also present at the gathering, which reportedly broke into two separate groups of about 10 lawmakers each. The meeting reflects the ongoing tension within the Assembly, where conflicting claims of leadership and governance have escalated in recent weeks.
The leadership crisis began in January when Obasa was impeached during his absence in the United States. Upon his return to Nigeria, he vehemently rejected the impeachment, calling the process unconstitutional and arguing that it did not follow the required procedures.
His return last week marked a turning point in the power struggle, as he forcefully entered the Speaker’s office and presided over a plenary session, declaring that he had never been removed from office.
Despite the turmoil, the Assembly remains divided, with some lawmakers still loyal to Obasa while others support the leadership of Meranda.
This ongoing clash has created a volatile political atmosphere in Lagos, raising questions about the legitimacy of the current leadership and the stability of the legislative process.
As the situation continues to unfold, all eyes are on the Assembly to see how this high-stakes leadership conflict will be resolved. The outcome of this power struggle could have significant implications for the political landscape in Lagos State.
